Restauranter Max Bozeman had many hustles before he opened his popular soul food restaurant The Greasy Spoon. The Houston native chats with Sky Houston for the newest episode of Behind The Blessing to discuss not only how he got started but how he found perseverance while fighting cancer, his favorite dishes at The Greasy Spoon and more!

“A couple of months after the pandemic, I was diagnosed with stage II cancer,” Bozeman told Sky. “Being a 37-year-old … I was 36 then, it knocked me off my feet. Emotionally, mentally … and the only thing I had was my spirit foundation, it was my faith. I’ll be perfectly honest with you, I cried for 15 minutes after being told by the doctor I had cancer. And I wasn’t all the way coherent from the anesthesia but I knew what the doctor told me. I thought it was a mistake.”

He added, “My uncle, Pastor James Dixon, he pulled up and said, ‘I came straight here, right away because I wanted to make sure, whatever thoughts you have in your mind right now, doubt … fear, I don’t want them to take root.’ He prayed for me, right there in the parking lot. And I said right there, ‘Let’s do it. Let’s go God!'”
