Eight-year-old, Zion Harvey is making history as the first person to ever receive a double hand transplant. When Harvey was two-years-old, he developed a serious infection that resulted in the removal of his hands and feet. That never stopped him from doing anything. “When I get those hands, I will be proud of what hands I get,” Harvey graciously told ABC News.
Philadelphia doctors performed the miracle after having a team of 40 doctors practice on cadavers. 12 of those surgeons performed the procedure at The Children’s Hospital In Philadelphia in 11 hours.

Zion appeared with his mom at a press conference after the surgery and said that he would be most excited about holding his baby sister. “My favorite thing [will be to] wait for her to run into my hands as I pick her up and spin her around,” he said.
“When I saw Zion’s hands for the first time after the operation I just felt like he was being reborn,” Zion’s mother, Pattie Ray said. “I see my son in the light I haven’t seen him in five years. It was like having a newborn. It was a very joyous moment for me. I was happy for him.”
We’re obsessed with Zion. Not only is he a fighter, who is grateful for his new hands, but he says things like this, “Family means trust, hope, support and if you fall down, they always catch you.”
