A 21-year-old Houston woman is facing charges accused of starving, hitting and burning a four-year-old boy. Shanque Dashuna Harrison is charged with injury to a child. Court documents indicate that the young boy was taken to Texas Children’s Hospital on March 21, 2012 by a CPS caseworker. According to doctors, the child had a distended stomach with skin breaking down on his back; the condition is a sign of advanced malnourishment.

Additional reports indicate that the child also had first-degree burns to his neck and multiple cuts and bruises to his face, neck, ears and back. Upon a thorough investigation and with injuries consistent with abuse, investigators said they were first notified about the boy’s situation when he showed up at school with a bloody mouth. Case workers also noticed that the child had a black eye on a separate occasion.

According to officials, the boy had makeup applied to his bruises and other noticeable injuries were covered up with long sleeved-shirts the boy would wear. The boy later admitted that Harrison had choked, hit and beat him. He also told investigators that she would not let him eat at home. Charges against Harrison were filed May 23, 2012.

Charges were filed on May 23, 2012.
