Most Americans recognize the need for proper oral hygiene. Nearly all the respondents taking part in the new “Healthy Mouths” report from Listerine and Reach say it takes more than just brushing one’s teeth to maintain good oral health. Still, 44 percent admit not having dental insurance prevents them from getting regular checkups, and 41 percent say they don’t have the money to take good care of their mouths. A third of the survey participants admit dental problems, including cavities and gingivitis, have kept them from smiling in photographs, and 37 percent say their tooth issues force them to bypass some of their favorite foods. Nearly 20 percent are losing sleep over their dental problems, and 15 percent are reluctant to kiss their loved ones because of their teeth.

Meanwhile, 70 percent believe a healthy smile reflects confidence. Over 85 percent feel that a healthy mouth also affects a person’s mood, and 87 percent think it has a positive effect on people’s social connections.
