There are some signs of economic stability in Brown County. Experts say it’s not quite a recovery, but the area is in a business expansion phase.

Betz Castro Rodriguez is one entrepreneur making a “go” of his business ambitions. His hair salon, The Main Salon, opened for business Wednesday.

A down economy may not seem like the perfect time to open your doors, but many potential entrepreneurs find it’s the right time to try something new.

“We’ve had instances where people have been laid off and have had this idea for many years,” Fred Monique, with Advance Green Bay Area Economic Development, said.

Young start-ups find counseling services at the Business Assistance Center in Green Bay. More than 250 companies have gone through the incubator program since 1987.

Monique says Brown County has a strong tradition of taking small operations and turning them into larger, successful companies. Schneider National Transit as one example.

“Schneider was a small local trucking company. It’s now the largest long-haul carrier in the world,” Monique said.
