American Idol, after months of rumors and names and false alarms, has finally made it formal.

The mammoth talent show announced today that Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith will join season 10’s judging panel. Ryan Seacrest introduced the pair amid blaring music and a screaming audience.

Of course, most people probably couldn’t hear it. The live stream played without sound for most of the announcement. It was, really, a bunch of unnecessary hoopla for something most of the country already knew.

“I’m looking for the next Michael Jackson,” Lopez said. (Good luck with that.)

Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records, will also join the show as an “in-house mentor.”

If anything, the new names will lure viewers curious to see if there’s any chemistry. Tyler brings plenty of experience. And Lopez, like it or not, should also prove an able asset. She mentored contestants during a previous season.

Oh, yeah — Randy Jackson was there, too.

Season 10 of Idol premieres in January.
