General Manager Dan Leonhardt says Costco was attracted to Katy because of the area's population growth.

"We've evidenced this area as being one of the top cities for year to year growth and potential growth and that's one of the reasons why we are here," Leonhardt said.

It's not only past growth in Katy but future growth that has attracted Costco to the location on the west side of the Grand Parkway along the south side of the Katy Freeway.

"There are master planned communities both to the north and the west of here that will lend itself to strong business," Leonhardt said.

Construction on the 152,000 square-foot store began in July. There will be a party Wednesday night from 6 to 8 p.m. that will be open to the public - even non-members. It is called a "V.I.P. party" only because Costco has invited Katy area dignitaries to be there. Leonhardt promises it will be worth the trip.

"During a new opening there are some items that we are able to get, some brand names and some new and exciting things that maybe an existing

building wouldn't have," Leonhardt said.

Membership starts at $55/year. The store opens to members only Thursday at 8 a.m.
