When students enter or return to HISD schools in a matter of days, they can expect more nutritious food choices when it comes to menu items.

According to HISD officials, as part of the USDA’s revised nutrition standards for the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program, HISD has added updates that incorporate the new meal requirements which offer students additional healthful menu items without the more nutritional food items having impact on cost.

“We are committed to serving our students healthy, nutritious meals,” HISD Superintendent Terry Grier said in a statement. “We have always set high nutrition standards for school meals. We support the USDA’s updated meal requirements and will continue to promote healthy eating habits among our students.”

The HISD school menu will now feature low as well as non-fat dairy options, lean protein choices,a larger variety of fruits and vegetables, various whole grain products and 100 percent fruit juice with no sugar added.

Flavored will also be offered in low-fat or even skim-free options and students will also see a decrease in the variety of desserts offered; many fresh fruit options will be replaced with those dessert options.
