A Montgomery County judge has dismissed contempt charges against 17-year-old honor student Diane Tran of Willis High School. Tran was sentenced to serve time in jail for a day, after missing approximately 18 days of school this year. Tran works one full-time job as well as one part-time job in addition to taking honors and college preparatory courses at school.

Word of her jail sentence grew and Tran was receiving support and offers of assistance globally. Judge Lanny Moriarty initially sentenced Tran to a day in jail for missing classes at school based upon the law which states that students between the ages of 12 and 18 are not allowed to miss more than 10 days of school in a six-month period. Violators of that truancy law can be charged with truancy which is a Class C misdemeanor.

But due to Tran’s work and school schedule, she admitted that it was difficult to attend class due to extreme exhaustion. Tran obtained the services of noted Houston attorney Brian Wice Wednesday. She then quickly learned that the charges against her were dismissed. According to Wice, there was a third-party fund collecting money for Tran but he did note that she had no control over that money collection. Reports indicate that the money Tran collected on her behalf will be donated to others who are less fortunate.
