Former San Francisco 49ers RB Glen Coffee elaborated on his decision to retire abruptly last week and said he thinks he may have a future calling in ministry.

“My heart wasn’t in the right place,” Coffee, a third-round pick in 2009, said on the Dan Patrick radio show. “The only thing in my head is I should be in some place else.”

Coffee, 23, who was a backup to Pro Bowler Frank Gore, told coach Mike Singletary last week he didn’t want to continue playing. The team has since signed two-time Pro Bowler Brian Westbrook.

Coffee had doubts about his commitment to football even when he was in college. “I thought maybe if I’m getting paid I’ll be able to tolerate it,” he told Dan Patrick.

Singletary hasn’t revealed details about his talk with Coffee. But the now-retired RB said it was amicable.

“It was two Christian men talking,” he said. “I think that he truly understood.”
