HPD: Person detained after shooting in Kashmere Gardens area
A fatal officer-involved shooting in Houston’s Fifth Ward resulted in the death of a 29-year-old man with mental health issues. The man, who was reportedly armed, was shot by police after raising his weapon in response to verbal commands. Prior to the shooting, the man had been involved in a disturbance at a residence, threatening family members with the weapon. The Houston Police Department stated that bodycam footage of the incident will be released within 30 days as part of their policy.
Four suspects in custody after Sugar Land CVS robbery
Four aggravated assault suspects who escaped from Sugar Land Police Department custody after being arrested for robbing a CVS Pharmacy store have been recaptured. The suspects assaulted a store employee before fleeing with cash. Houston Police Department officers assisted in the search, and the suspects were caught shortly after escaping. The suspects, aged 17 to 19, face additional charges including attempted murder. The store employee sustained minor injuries, while the assaulted officer is in stable condition.
HFD: Firefighter treated for ‘medical event’ during 2-alarm fire in West Loop area
A Houston firefighter was hospitalized after responding to a two-alarm fire at a high-rise building on North Braeswood Boulevard. Smoke and flames were visible from the 11th floor, but no injuries were reported. The firefighter was treated for a medical event, and crews were able to extinguish the fire within an hour. HISD Expanding Access to 16 High-Demand Career Programs Through Barbara Jordan Career Center
Houston ISD is expanding its Career and Technical Education offerings for students at ten high schools through the Barbara Jordan Career Center, providing access to 16 programs of study beyond what is available at these schools. The changes will allow students to start career training as early as ninth grade, reduce waitlists for popular programs, and equip students with skills for the workforce or post-secondary education. The BJCC will grow enrollment to nearly 4,000 students by 2028-29, offering state-of-the-art facilities and specialized programs to prepare students for high-demand, living-wage jobs. The expansion aims to provide students with diverse pathways to success, combining career-focused training with college readiness to ensure future opportunities in the evolving job market. Through collaboration with workforce experts, HISD is modernizing the BJCC to offer high-impact learning experiences and prepare students for the demands of the 2035 global economy.
