The 3rd Annual Swim Safety Day was held at the Alief Aquatic Center on Saturday, July 26th, 2025. This event was part of the Summer of Safety Series and focused on water safety for families, including free swim lessons. It was a partnership with the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, Houston Waves Swim Club, and Coach CPR.

A 2017 study by the USA Swimming Foundation found that 64% of Black, 45% of Hispanic, and 40% of white children in the US have “no or low swimming ability”. These figures suggest a considerable portion of Houston’s diverse child population may also lack swimming skills.

Learning CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is crucial for anyone, regardless of their medical background. It’s a skill that can literally be the difference between life and death in a cardiac emergency. This was also a featured lesson in the day’s program, with professional instructors guiding attendees through the proper way to render aid.

Early swimming lessons offer a multitude of benefits that extend far beyond the pool, laying a strong foundation for a child’s safety, physical health, cognitive development, and social-emotional well-being.
