“We are bullish on the future of American innovation, and we’re proud to build on our longstanding U.S. investments with this $500 billion commitment to our country’s future,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement Monday.
The move for a major investment in U.S. comes after Cook met with President Donald Trump last week. The company has received pressure from the Trump administration over where Apple assembles most of its products, which includes China.
The Houston factory is set to open in 2026, a major part of Apple’s four-year U.S. investment plan. In addition to the factory, the company lans to hire 20,000 new employees in the U.S. Most of the new hires will be employed in Apple’s AI and machine learning, research and development and silicon engineering departments.
Apple will also double its U.S. Advanced Manufacturing Fund to $10 billion and create a new manufacturing academy in Michigan.
In addition to technology development, the plan includes investing in content production for Apple TV+, Apple’s streaming service, which will take place in 20 states.
