#MaybeHeDoesntHitYou Raises Awareness On Emotional Abuse

Twitter has recently sparked a much-needed conversation about emotional and psychological abuse in relationships.

Dominican-American writer Zahira Kelly, who started the hashtag #MaybeHeDoesntHitYou told the Huffington Post, “The initial tweets were about me and people close to me.” She also told the BBC, “Abuse is often seen as very cut and dry, and only physical. For several years now on social media, on a daily basis I talk about many different forms of abuse and what they look like,” Kelly said. Also, she wanted to empower people to “suss out damaging situations.”

Soon after it started trending with women and men sharing their own perspectives and experiences.

Emotional abuse is extremely damaging to women.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, “Emotional and psychological abuse can often be just as extreme as physical violence. Lack of physical violence does not mean the abuser is any less dangerous to the victim, nor does it mean the victim is any less trapped by the abuse.”

Thank you Zahira!

#BlackLivesMatter: Second Officer’s Trial to Begin in Freddie Gray Case

The trial of Baltimore Police Officer Edward M. Nero in the arrest and death of Freddie Gray will begin this Thursday. Nero has pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree assault, two counts of misconduct in office and reckless endangerment, The Root reported. It’s believed the trial will last five days.

Nero’s trial has been delayed for months given that lawyers and the court were trying to figure out whether or not the officers accused must testify against each other. As The Root noted, Nero’s trial is only before a judge, rather than a jury, and the prosecution is arguing that Nero didn’t have the authority to detain Gray and therefore committed assault.

Freddie Gray, 25,  died in police custody last April, suffered from a “high-energy injury” to his neck and spine by the hands of Baltimore police. Gray, whose death sparked weeks of protests in Baltimore, was unsecured when placed in a police van with shackled feet and hands.

On Tuesday, a 19-year-old French woman killed herself while recording it on Periscope, a live action app.

According to the New York TimesOcéane threw herself under a train at the Égly station, about 25 miles south of Paris, with police officials opening up an investigation about her death the next day.

Why she killed herself hasn’t hasn’t been determined, but a local prosecutor told the press that the young woman texted to a friend of her former boyfriend, saying the ex-boyfriend had abused and raped her. In the message, “she declares she is ending her life because of the evil that he did to her,” the Times noted.

The teen hinted to her followers that she was planning something and when asked if she was going to commit suicide she said “no.” The videos are no longer available on Periscope, but excerpts from the videos were widely circulated on YouTube, with the suicide blacked out, the Times wrote.

Just sad.
