While there has been a buzz about the Rev. Jamal H. Bryant running for Mayor of Baltimore, his announcement Monday took just about everyone by surprised when he announced he would be running for the House of Representatives seat currently held by Rep. Elijah E. Cummings. Bryant said, he has yet to have a conversation with Cummings about his announcement.

Bryant, 44, is the Senior pastor of the Empowerment Temple in Northwest Baltimore and spoke before a small crowd this morning.  “I represent a new generation that’s coming forward — this whole movement of activists that are emerging nationwide,” says Bryant.

Bryant also talked about the recent unrest in Baltimore, the shortcomings in the city’s school system, the middle class and police brutality stating that in too many instances, the police are “out of control.”

Cummings has served in the House since 1996, representing about half of Baltimore and portions of Howard and Baltimore counties.
