Black girls are out here making waves in Hollywood.
Adding fuel to the rumor mill that Ava Duvernay may direct the next superhero film “Panther,” the director Tweeted Saturday about a real-life Black superhero, activist Bree Newsome, is the brave, beautiful soul behind the takedown of the Confederate flag in Columbia Saturday.
The Duvernay rumors came just weeks after reports surfaced that Marvel was looking to cast Beyoncé for the next Avengers movie. #TeamBeautiful loves us some Bey, but we’re not sure how we feel about that one.
But all of this got us thinking about all of the #BlackGirlMagic in the world right now, and how we need to see more of that onscreen. Take a look at our favorite picks for Black actresses who should be cast in the next comic-book superhero film:
Nicole Beharie

Nicole Beharie has taken on baddies from the depths of Hell in Sleepy Hollow and come out on the other side. She’s even gone toe-to-toe with supernatural treasure hunters, so a supervillain should be nothing for her, should she get cast in a Marvel movie.
Lupita N’Yongo

Who doesn’t love Lupita? We’d love nothing more than to see this beauty kicking ass and taking names onscreen.
Freema Agyeman

You might not be entirely familiar with her, but Doctor Who fans and Sense8 viewers will recognize Freema! She’s known for playing incredibly capable characters, and she more than holds her own on any team she’s cast for.
Aja Naomi King

Aja Naomi King is prim, proper and pretty in her role as a law student in ABC’s hit drama How To Get Away With Murder, but her story line has proven that she’s not one to shrink from a challenge. She might be tiny, but she can be pretty tough. If Evangeline Lilly wasn’t already playing Wasp in Ant-Man, Aja would have been ideal for the role.
Naturi Naughton

Fun fact: Naturi Nautghton had been cast as Cecilia Reyes in The Wolverine before her character was cut from the film. Why not give her another shot at playing a superhero?
Angela Bassett

This woman is amazing in everything! Equal parts, elegance and sass, we could see her fitting in well with The Avengers. She already did Green Lantern with Ryan Reynolds, now it’s time for her to be cast as the heroine!
Gabrielle Union

Gabrielle can pull off complicated characters as she does in Being Mary Jane, funny characters Think Like A Man, or she can just take on the daunting task of being generally fabulous Top Five. It would be fun to see what she can do in an action-packed role, and a great change of pace.
Meagan Good

Hear us out! It might be hard to see Meagan as an action/comic movie star, but she’s got a certain kind of tenacity that might be a great booster for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Who knows, maybe Marvel will come knocking after Minority Report debuts on Fox this fall.
Samira Wiley

Samira is tough, but she still shows a LOT of heart as Poussey in Orange Is The New Black. What better qualities to play a superhero?!
Yara Shahidi

If Marvel was to cast a woman as Hawkeye, it might be from the Young Avengers team lineup. In that series, Hawkeye is a young lady, so the Black-ish star could take on that role. Failing that, she might not be bad as Miss America from the same team.
