Zoe Saldana wants all men to know taking their wife’s last name will not lead to their demise.

After it was revealed that Zoe’s husband, artist Marco Perego, decided to take her surname, many fans and critics chimed in, even implying the Guardians of the Galaxy actress persuaded him to do it.

In a Facebook post Monday, Zoe explained Marco wanted to take her name – despite her attempts to stop him. She also says she was inspired by his actions and hopes that other men take the opportunity to redefine what it means to be masculine. She writes:

Why is it so surprising, shocking- eventful that a man would take his wife’s surname? Women have never been asked if its ok for them to give up their names — why doesn’t that make the news? Men, you will not cease to exist by taking your partner’s surname.

Gentlemen, I implore you to think outside the box- remove the box altogether. Let’s redefine masculinity. A real “man” leads along side his partner. A real man accepts his mortality. A real man acknowledges that nothing can be done alone.

I hope that the “buzz” behind this topic isn’t just for gossip — but an inspiration for us all to look within and see what is truly important.

The family welcomed twin boys Bowie and Cy in November. Zoe is currently promoting her new indie flick Infinitely Polar Bearstarring Mark Ruffalo, and coming to theaters June 19.
