TBR — Las Vegas, NV — The Gospel Music Workshop of America (GMWA) has been blessed with a new arrival. Introducing, the Goochland and Vicinity Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America.

During a sit down interview at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, we got a chance to talk with Michele Armstrong who gave us the exclusive scoop.

Armstrong said, “The Lord spoke to Cedric Copeland, who is now the Chapter Rep (for the Goochland and Vicinity Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America) who said it was time to do something different and move beyond where we are, and to find people who don’t know anything about the GMWA. So in January we did just that and gathered some people together and shared that vision.

Armstrong said, “The Lord also spoke to me at that time and said the laborers are few, but there is harvest out there, that we need to go get, so we decided to put this thing together.”

Assisting as the Assistant Reps are Michele Armstrong and Delores Armstrong, who are related by marriage.

From that point, they moved forward and put together a spreadsheet that included a breakdown of their nearby communities. Armstrong said, they traveled to Louisa, Powhatan, Goochland and other nearby counties, and gathered the names of those who wanted to participate. They also met with several churches, choirs, pastors and choir directors and they all agreed that this would be a great idea to help with the continued growth of “Sacred music not just Gospel Music” and to be a part of the process.

Armstrong said, “We had more than 100 people to sign up and show interest in being a part of this new choir and ministry.”

The actual birth date for the chapter was February 25, 2015, that’s when Armstrong said they received their official letter recognizing them as an official GMWA chapter. Their first informational rehearsal just took place on April 6th at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Gum Springs, VA.

When asked why did she feel there was a need for a new chapter when Richmond’s chapter was already in place and just up the road, Armstrong said, “Well distance was a major factors. In fact we had some people traveling an hour just to come to Richmond to be in a rehearsal from 7p.m.to 9p.m., and there were so many others who wanted to come, but the distance remained a factor.

Armstrong said, “After talking to so many people in the area, that’s when we realized we were missing an entire different audience.”

So now, the Goochland and Vicinity Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America is holding rehearsals at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Gum Springs, VA, which is about 45 minutes outside of Richmond.

Armstrong says, “The support we are getting has been beyond our expectation and it has been awesome and continues to grow”

Currently the new chapter has approximately 100 members and more people continue to sign up.

Armstrong says, “You can be sure, when our National Convention takes place in New Orleans in July, the Goochland and Vicinity Chapter of the GMWA will be in the house.”
