Since the time of the Old Testament, infertility has been part of the human experience. Many of us know someone who has struggled desperately to have a child or have experienced that difficulty ourselves. In the 21st century, though, infertility is met with “options,” “solutions,” and countless technologies offering hope to those in our midst struggling with fertility issues.
Sheri Shepherd used IVF to conceive a child with her husband Lamar Sally but now is not interested in caring for the baby, who is being carried by a surrogate mother.
Now, Sally says in a new interview that Shepherd has removed the newborn baby boy she had via surrogate from her health insurance.
The TV writer opens up about the custody battle over Lamar Jr (or as he calls him ‘LJ’) in a new interview with People Magazine.
In the chat, Lamar says Sherri, 47, was enthusiastic about having the child until six months into the surrogate’s pregnancy and then everything changed.
He told the publication: ‘She said, “We’ll co-parent. We’ll work it out. I never thought in a million years she would turn her back on LJ.”
He went onto claim that his estranged wife was initially enthusiastic about having the child: ‘[Sherri] said, “I will love the baby like it’s mine. It’s not about whose egg it is. I’m going to instantly have a connection with this baby. That’s being a mother.”‘
Lamar may have a point. Surrogacy differs from adoption in that surrogacy intentionally establishes a situation that demands that a woman not bond with the child she is carrying. If you intended to have a child that was nit going to bond to its mother, do you not have some responsibility? Lamar also alleges that Shepherd removed Lamar Jr from her health insurance. This issue actually reflects part of the conutry’s inability to keep up with technology and society.
In response to assisted reproductive technologies and procedures, an uneven patchwork of policies and laws in the U.S. attempt to protect intended parents rather than surrogates or the children they carry. Legislative debates frequently take place with no larger sense of the gravity of this practice or how it might harm families and society.
What do you think? Should all care for a child conceived in IVF or other means have all its rights spelled out in initial paperwork?
What say you?
