Packing your child’s lunch is an important part of the back to school routine, but don’t forget about healthy back to school snacks.

“Keep cut up vegetables ready to grab in the refrigerator. Keep bowls of fruit out on the counter so they can see those nice bananas and oranges and grab those instead.”

Dr. Teresia  O’Connor, a pediatrician and assistant professor at Baylor College of Medicine says, healthy snacks help children get the nutrition and energy they need to get through the rest of the day.

“Foods that have a little bit of protein in them or whole grains will help a child feel fuller long than processed foods or foods that have a lot of sugar in them.”

Dr. O’Connor also recommends children returning home from school have a glass of water or skim milk with their after school snack to keep them well hydrated. A new back to school water bottle may also not be a bad idea.
