Founder and Publisher of The Voice Newspaper, Jack J. Green, Dead at 71

jack_green_lunheon_1_t580 To the shock of many, the founder and publisher of The Voice newspaper passed away from chronic lung-related illness at the age of 71.

Jack J. Green passed away peacefully on Thursday, according to the newspaper’s website.

Green founded the VOICE in 1985 to service the African-American community in Virginia. The newspaper became the Richmond Voice in 1992 when a sister publication, the Hampton Roads Voice launched. The newspaper announced the two publications will once again become The VOICE next week.

Green was born in Nottoway on January 16, 1943. He served in the United States Air Force during Vietnam, then returned to Virginia where he was past president of District IV Community Action Program in Hampton, past president of the Nottoway County Branch NAACP and District 3 Supervisor in the Nottoway County Board of Supervisors.

Green married Ruby Adams Green and they had two sons, Stephen and August, and one daughter, Jackie. He was grandfather to two grandsons.

Funeral plans are pending and will be announced at a later date. The body rests at Hawkes Funeral Home in Blackstone.
