(HOUSTON) — This year’s class of graduating Houston Independent School District seniors has been offered a record-shattering amount in college scholarships and financial aid.
The total as of Thursday was nearly $233 million, surpassing last year’s amount by more than $47 million. And we’re told the number goes up daily.

Earlier this week, more than 100 seniors were awarded a total of $1.8 million in scholarships from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Cesar E. Chavez High School took home the top number of awards, claiming a total of $252,000. The school has a record number of 14 graduates who will each receive a four-year, $18,000 scholarship.

The district total also includes $160,000 awarded by the Marvy Finger Foundation to students pursuing two-year college degree programs.
“These scholarship amounts are a testimony to the hard work of our students, who have not only done the hard work in the classroom but have also worked hard to find ways to fund their educational goals,” HISD Superintendent Terry Grier said. “The work of the teachers, counselors and college- and career-readiness team should also be commended.”
HISD held recognition events throughout the month of May to honor excelling students. That included hosting about 2,000 sophomores, juniors and seniors at the 2014 Cool To Be Smart celebration.
Students who had taken Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or dual language courses and exams competed for prizes. One senior even won a brand new car.
An Academic Signing Day ceremony honored seniors from each campus by celebrating their acceptance to two- and four-year colleges.
