(HOUSTON) — There is never a dull moment in Houston Independent School District. Next fall, Jones High School could become home to two groups of students.

It’s possible students from Milby High School will be housed at Jones while their campus is rebuilt. Milby parents and students don’t like the idea. HISD is still considering it.

HISD spokesperson Shalia Reid said the district has decided to convert Jones from a comprehensive high school into Futures Academy — an academy for health sciences and construction technology. A number of parents and students don’t like that idea.

The NAACP has even filed a lawsuit against HISD in an attempt to save Jones.

But can Jones High School handle the addition of Milby students, and an academy?

“We know we have enough space there to make sure all the programs that need to be housed there can do so with as limited disruption as possible,” Reid said.

Reid said the district hopes to have some definite decisions made before school ends.
