You can now get a ride to the Houston Food Bank on a Houston Metro bus. Houston Food Bank President Brian Greene says the 348 Food Bank Shuttle has three destinations: the Fifth Ward/Denver Harbor Transit Center, the Food Bank, and Houston Community College’s Northeast Campus.
Greene says the Metro 348 Shuttle benefits the Food Bank — and its clients — in at least three ways:
- It’s a great way for potential volunteers from H.C.C Northeast to get the food bank.
- It gives those who participate in the Food Bank’s Serving for Success jobs program an additional way to get there.
- Many of the Food Bank’s clients have jobs which make it difficult for them to get to a pantry during the day. In fact, half of the households served by the Food Bank have at least one working adult living in them. The 348 runs from 7 a.m. to 6:40 p.m., so clients who fit into this category can catch a bus to the Food Bank’s Emergency Pantry when they’re not working, and stock up on the food they need to feed their families.
The Houston Food Bank feeds 137,000 people each week.
