This aerial photo shows the remains of a nursing home, left, apartment complex, center, and fertilizer plant, right, destroyed by an explosion in West, Texas. Rescuers searched the smoking remnants for survivors of Wednesday night’s thunderous fertilizer plant explosion, gingerly checking smashed houses and apartments for anyone still trapped in debris while the community awaited word on the number of dead. Initial reports put the fatalities as high as 15, but later in the day, authorities backed away from any estimate and refused to elaborate. More than 160 people were hurt. The Astros have a home stand that continues through Wednesday. During that time, the team is accepting donations to assist with relief efforts in the city of West. News 92 FM’s Danny Mata has more.
The most requested items are things like diapers, baby wipes, gift cards for grocery stores, toiletries, powdered sports drinks, toilet paper, hand sanitizer, canned and boxed food, clean sheets and towels and unopened bags of dog and cat food. You can also donate cash.
Everything goes straight to West to help with the relief efforts. You can donate 90 minutes prior to game time all the way up to the first pitch.
