A New York judge has denied a request by a prominent atheists group to prevent the display of a steel cross at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.

American Atheists filed suit against the state of New Jersey, the city of New York, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, according to CNN. The group says the display of the cross is a violation of their civil rights. AA wants the cross removed from the museum, or for the addition of an atheist memorial to the collection.

In the official complaint, the atheists said the cross caused them emotional pain and distress.

The cross was found among the debris of the collapsed World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, and were part of the original beam supports for one of the buildings.

AA says they will appeal the ruling.
