A grandmother, her daughter and two grandchildren escaped a house fire in east Harris County, by jumping out of a window. Mary Smith, 74, shares a mobile home on North 11th street near Clear Lake Road in The Highlands with her daughter and grandsons.

Channel 2 reports the fire started on the porch shortly after midnight. Smith’s daughter tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher but when she realized it was spreading, she called for help. The grandmother got her grandchildren to the kitchen window and tossed them out, then jumped out herself. The mother suffered burns on her arms and hands. The grandmother and the children were not hurt. Two dogs were lost in the fire. It took Highlands volunteer fire department more than an hour to put out the blaze.

The mobile home was completely destroyed. The grandmother’s daughter Elizabeth Smith told firefighters, she is devastated, as her son died two weeks.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
