Former U.S. Rep Gabrielle Giffords and her husband retired astronaut Mark Kelly, have made the decision to leave their League City home and move back to Tucson, Arizona.

Kelly announced the move on his Twitter page on Sunday. He wrote: “Moving back to Tucson today. Gabby has been waiting for this day for a long time.”

For the past year, Kelly and his wife Giffords have been residing in his League City home; it is the home he owned while working at the nearby Johnson Space Center.

Additional reports indicate that Giffords had finished her therapy in Houston and will continue therapy in Arizona. The couple reportedly bought a new home in Tucson and will use that home as their primary residence. There have been no plans to sell their League City home.

Giffords was among 19 people who were shot by a gunman outside a Tucson supermarket where she was meeting publicly with constituents. The shooting happened back in January of 2011.

She relocated to the Houston suburb of League City after the shooting. There, she received extensive therapy at Houston’s TIRR Memorial Hermann Hospital.

On January 22, 2012, Giffords announced that she would be resigning from her congressional seat in order to concentrate on recovering from her gunshot wounds; she did make a promise to return to public service in the future
