A box of marine flares marked as explosives, caused an evacuation of homes and businesses in Houston’s Galleria area Wednesday evening. According to reports, the recipient of the package left the suspicious box with firefighters at Houston Fire Station No. 2, 5880 Woodway at about 8:30 P.M. Wednesday. Investigators stated that the FedEx parcel was marked with a symbol indicating pyrotechnics.

The fire department looked at the package, became alarmed by the box and then evacuated the fire department as well as homes and businesses within the vicinity of the fire department. As a precaution, firefighters evacuated a total of ten homes and 30 apartments in the surrounding area.

HFD officials, a hazmat team and the HPD bomb squad responded to the station to screen the package. It was soon determined that the contents were confirmed to be maritime flares. After that confirmation, evacuees were cleared to return home and to the fire house.
