The woman accused of killing a young mother and trying to claim the baby as her own gave an interview to KHOU-Channel 11 on Sunday.

Verna McClain, 30, is charged with capital murder in the death of Kala Golden Schuchardt. She is currently held in the Montgomery County Jail.

McClain told KHOU:

“I’m nothing like what these people are making me out to be. I’m the same person everybody knows and loves … Don’t sit and look at me as if I’m some sort of monster. I’m not. Until you know the facts, don’t sit and judge.”

In the interview, the suspect told KHOU, “I’m so paranoid I don’t know who to trust.” She also said her mental state is “borderline.”

On April 23, a Montgomery County judge denied bail for McClain. According to authorities, on April 17 she fatally shot Schuchardt and then snatched 3-day-old Keegan outside a pediatric center in Spring. Schuchardt, 28, was shot multiple times in the chest. She was transported to Memorial Herrmann Hospital in the The Woodlands where she was pronounced dead.

Schuchardt was married and had two other children: Kamden, 4, and Keaton, 2.
