October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Texas has a problem.

A new report by the Texas Council on Family Violence (TCFV) shows an increase in the number of women killed in domestic murders in the state.

The report found that 142 women were killed by an intimate partner in 2010 – an increase of 31 deaths since 2009. Harris County had the state’s highest number of deaths with 35.

Violence, however, does not have to take a toll on families. Gloria Terry, president of TCFV, said the issue represents a “serious, preventable public health problem.”
