The anniversary of the March on Washington and Martin Luther King Jr.’s famed “I Have a Dream” speech was not the date originally planned for the dedication of the King Memorial on the National Mall.

“I didn’t choose Aug. 28; it was when the construction would be completed,” said Harry E. Johnson, Sr., president and CEO of the Washington, D.C. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation.
