Local churches and ministries are pooling their resources to minister to the homeless and the hungry on Christmas Day.

About 140 people are expected at the Christmas Revival in the Park will be providing the food and other volunteers will bring side dishes. from 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 18 at Gibson Park in Conroe, located at 514 Lilly Boulevard.

South County churches taking part in the project include Gateway Baptist Church, WoodsEdge Church and Woodlands Church Fellowship Campus.

The Christmas Revival in the Park includes a praise and worship band, Christmas carols, baked good and gifts. The event is hosted by Mark 10:27 ministry started by WoodsEdge Community Church member Sammie Smimmo. Mark 10:27 ministry will also help provide food for the event.

“I always ask different ministries to join in and help as no one ministry can do it with out help,” Smimmo stated in an e-mail.

Nick Brown, member of the Spring-based Gateway Baptist involved with the effort, said it’s an important mission because “God calls us to (do it).”

Brown, who is taking part in his second revival, said the hope is to continue revivals on at least a once a month basis. Currently, four revival events are held each year at various locations where the homeless live in order to prepare them for upcoming seasonal weather changes. Spiritual needs are met through a time of worship with live music, an inspirational message from local pastors and outreach ministers, an opportunity to pray with prayer partners and the gift of a Bible. Physical needs are met through the provision of hot food, clothing, haircuts and basic toiletries.
