Gospel/ blues singer Marva Wright passed away March 23 after complications from a stroke suffered last year. The 62 year old crooner was a native of New Orleans, but spent time in Chicago at the home of Mahalia Jackson who was a friend of her mother Wright started singing blues professionally at age 40 and appeared at festivals around the nation including the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

Wright’s best known songs are “Heartbreakin’ Woman” and “Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean.” Wright would usually appear with her band, the BMW’s Her family says she was just recovering from a less serious stroke after a bigger one in June 2009.
