African American churches were once a place where congregations would unite to hear a message from God, fellowship at community events and gather as a safe-haven during times of racial injustice and slavery. But in the past few decades, the African American church has been under extreme scrutiny from scandals involving homosexuality, molestation, infidelity and even murder.
Bishop T.D. Jakes, founder of The Potter’s House, a 30,000-member church in Dallas, offered a eulogy for Pastor Zachary Tims. Although the media was not allowed inside, the Orlando Sentinel reported that Jakes talked about how unhappy Tims was.
"Florida mega-church Pastor Zachery Tims was found dead in a hotel in New York City last Friday. The police do not suspect foul play and believe he was alone at the time of his death.
