The quest for the next “American Idol” got underway last night, as Fox’s hit, reality, vocal competition returned for its ninth season. Thousands of singing hopefuls showed up in Boston, Massachusetts looking to become this season’s big winner. While this year’s installment will undoubtedly produce several talented vocalists, there was an over abundance of individuals who weren’t cut out for the competition. Despite having to sit through numerous off-key auditions, the “American Idol” judges still managed to hand out several trips to Hollywood. Student Ashley Rodriguez, actor Mike Davis and 16-year-old Katie Stevens were just a few of the contestants who delivered auditions worthy of a golden ticket.

“American Idol’s” return to the air comes just one day after the show’s biggest star — judge Simon Cowell — announced that he would be leaving after this season. The sharp-tongued, British import plans on debuting a U.S. version of the U.K.’s “The X Factor” next year. It is rumored that former “Idol” judge, Paula Abdul, could be joining Cowell on his new television project. Fox’s “American Idol” rolls on tonight with an all-new episode at 8 p.m. Eastern.
