Dear Steve Harvey: Please Forgive Us

Dear Steve Harvey:

After watching your interview on a recent segment of the Praise the Lord broadcast on Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN), I was saddened.  In your interview you shared how during a difficult time in your life you reached out to Christians and you were met with judgment and religion, instead of love and compassion. For that I am truly sorry.

Please forgive some of our brothers and sisters who might be a little more zealous and legalistic and who go so firmly by the letter of the law instead of by the love of Christ.

That is not what we are taught as believers. We are taught to walk in love, to shed abroad the love of Jesus Christ. We are taught that each day that we are given new mercies. (Lamentations 3:22-24) And it is nothing but the grace and mercy of God that keeps us. The blood of Jesus saved us (Romans 10:9-10) and His grace and mercy sustains us. So please know that none of us are in the position to judge. I believe that only one man walked this earth blameless and that was Jesus Christ.  (Hebrews 4:14-16)

According to the scripture we have to walk out our soul salvation with fear and trembling. We have to battle with our flesh (our desires) and surrender to the leading of the Holy Spirit. As with all things, it is a process- a process that differs for each believer. We are to walk in the light and attract those to the light- the light of Jesus. Not walk in judgment or condemnation. Galatians 6:1 states: Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. Since your accusers felt that you were in error, you should have been met with restoration and love, instead of judgment and persecution.

Please forgive our pious attitude and demeaning spirit. Please forgive us for thinking more highly of ourselves than we should. (Romans 12:3) Please forgive us with being caught up in religion and not being caught up in relationship with God. Please forgive us for not showing the love of Christ which we claim to possess. Know that you are not alone. God loves you and so do we.  Read more.
