(DICKINSON, TX) — When shrimp season opens at sunset Tuesday, local shrimpers aren’t expecting much. Apparently, you can blame it on the weather.

Mary Smith runs Hillman Seafood in Dickinson. She said this shrimp season could produce just a fraction of the catch it did last year, when an average boat would bring in 2,000 pounds of shrimp.

This year, she said that same boat will be lucky to catch 100 pounds.

Smith blames the poor showing on the long winter. The colder water kept the shrimp from developing as fast.

The drought hasn’t helped, either. Due to a lack of runoff from the rivers and bayous, there is less plankton for the shrimp to eat.

Due to fewer shrimp, Smith said you can expect the price to nearly double in the coming months.

“The prices have just skyrocketed,” Smith said.

Shrimp that cost $5 a pound last year are expected to cost $9 this year.
