As we head into summer you can expect more motorcycles on the road.

Unfortunately that often translates in to more motorcycle accidents. Eric Huseby and his wife Cindy are survivors of such an accident and lived to tell the story.

Eric is a mountain of a man with biceps like Popeye, a bald head and beard. He’d be scary if it wasn’t for his huge, ready grin and perpetually twinkling eyes. His wife Cindy by contrast is a petite pretty blonde who smiles a lot and blushes easily.

Listen to NEWS 92 FM’s Maria Todd speak with the Huseby family:

They have a blended family of a grown son and two grown daughters, as well as a six-year-old girl and grandchildren. Some days after work and often on the weekends the pair would hop on Eric’s Harley and head out for a relaxing ride until one fateful Sunday in The Woodlands when they were run over by a distracted driver.

Both he and Cindy were seriously injured. Find out what happened next below…

Eric had three surgeries on his leg followed by six months in an immobilizer and eight months of therapy.

Two additional surgeries to remove damaged cartilage have left him unable to run and doctors have told him he will eventually have to have a knee replacement. Cindy lives with varying intensities of lower and upper back pain and has given up riding out of fear that another accident would take them both away from the family they love.

Eric still rides occasionally, but has a message for motorists.

“Look before you act,” Eric said.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is reminding drivers to look out for motorcycles as May is Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month.

DPS suggests motorists use caution at intersections and when changing lanes, two common places where motorcycle collisions occur. Half of all fatal motorcycle crashes in Texas occur because a car or truck driver never saw the motorcyclist.
