Is this a live chupacabra? A family in East Texas says it could be. (KAVU photo)

(RATCLIFFE, TX) — A family in South Texas believes they’ve captured the elusive chupacabra — alive.

Jackie Stock of Ratcliffe tells Victoria TV station KAVU that her husband caught the creature Sunday night.

The Latest News Headlines, Traffic and Weather:

“He called me to come and look, and I said ‘Bubba that looks like a baby chupacabra,’” she said.

The name chupacabra means “goat sucker.” It’s another mysterious animal like Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster. According to legends, it’s commonly been described as a hairless beast with a scaly back reaching lengths of three to four feet. They are sometimes depicted with fangs and have been said to hiss or screech. They’ve reportedly been found everywhere from Puerto Rico to Maine.

Some people said the creature in the Stocks’ cage could be a raccoon, but neighbors said the animal’s growl is a sign that it’s not.

“I hunted coons for 20 years with dogs and I ain’t ever seen anything that looks like that right there,” Ratcliffe resident Arlen Parma told KAVU. “A coon doesn’t make that noise, or a possum. What makes that noise? I guess a chupacabra does.”

Another alleged chupacabra discovery was reported in Texas just last month.

Texas Parks and Wildlife officials say most chupacabra discoveries end up being coyotes or other dogs with mange.

KAVU reports that the animal in Ratcliffe is being fed a diet of cat food and corn until they can figure out exactly what it is.
