Gift cards sales topped $110 billion in 2012, according to CEB Towergroup Research. But the popular gift also comes with some pitfalls.

Dan Parsons with the Better Business Bureau says be wary of third party companies who offer to buy your unused, or unwanted gift cards.

“You’ve got really good people in that business and you’ve got down right crooks in it,” Parsons said. “So it’s important before you go to one of those third party vendors–if you can use that word–that you check them out thoroughly. Get their BBB report.”

Parsons says if you go that route, check the company’s track record, good and bad.

“You want to see an established track record, even if they’ve got complaints,” Parsons said. “That they’re being handled, that they’re being responsive, and better yet that they’ve been around for a while.”
