Sometimes things have to get worse before they get better.

Monday’s traffic mess on the southwest freeway was the result of emergency repairs to the pavement where giant potholes had opened up and were putting drivers at risk.

Danny Perez with the Texas Department of Transportation says this sort of problem happens from time to time. It is especially common during extremely hot temperatures and wet weather. In fact, the weather played a big role in how long it took for the repairs to be made. Perez says the idea was to temporarily patch the roadway with an instant pothole repair mixture.

Perez says work crews will be back out on the Southwest Freeway at Rice this weekend to do more permanent repairs. Meanwhile, if you come across a problem on one of the city’s freeways or state-maintained highways, you can call 888-885-8248 to report it. If you want to report a problem with a city street, dial 311.
