It might seem unusual for a little boy with a t-shirt and overalls picking up a snowball in the streets of LA, but Union Rescue Mission gave over 100 homeless children a special Christmas in July complete with Christmas presents and Santa Claus. An estimated 254,000 people, including children, experience homelessness in Los Angeles County and with the help of the largest homeless shelter Union Rescue Mission, the children were able to celebrate a snow filled summer.
Rev. Andy Bales, CEO of Union Rescue Mission, states that some of the kids have never experienced snow before, but to have mounds of snow brought to them on a hot day in July is just great fun. As a truck dumped 20 tons of snow to cover the back parking lot of the Union Rescue Mission, the 9th Annual Christmas in July event featured huge snow caps, presents, game booths and much more.
“I’m just doing what I know God asked me to do – to practice what I preach to feed the hungry” says Bales.
