The Anderson Family live in a upscale Chicago neighborhood in a nice house. John and Maggie Anderson both hold MBAs from top notch school and have successful careers. However, John and Maggie Anderson felt like something was missing. They believed they could do more for the community and for their children. The family soon decided to create a black year by buying from black companies, using black professionals and shopping in the black community.

As the Andersons lived the black year, they realized that accomplishing their goal was not as easy as they thought. They had to drive farther, pay more and settle for poor selections. They soon realized black business were harder and harder to find due to African American consumers choosing to not invest or hire within the community. The Anderson Family soon found a connection to their experience and the high 14 percent African American unemployment rate.

Their experiences on buying black and their recent findings are mentioned in their recent book, “Our Black Year.”
