According to a complaint filed by the U.S. Attorney Office in the Southern District of New York, Ann Pettway, the alleged kidnapper of an infant from New York’s Harlem Hospital 23 years ago has admitted to abducting the infant and raising her as her own.
The complaint, sworn by FBI Special Agent Maria Johnson, indicates Pettway made these admissions verbally to a police officer and then again in writing.
The document says Pettway admitted she: “went to Harlem Hospital where she saw the victim [Carlina White]. … took the victim without consent and brought her outside the hospital. When no one stopped Pettway, Pettway took the victim with her on a train to Pettway’s home in Bridgeport, Connecticut. … In Connecticut, Pettway told her friends and family members that the victim was her child.”
The complaint indicates that Pettway has expressed remorse for her actions, saying she was distraught that she would never be a parent after several miscarriages. It says, “Pettway is sorry and knows that she has caused a lot of pain.”
The current federal charge Pettway is facing carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, a minimum sentence of 20 years in prison, together with a possible maximum fine of $250,000.
