A visit to your local barber may get you more than a haircut in on May 22, 2010. Dr. Bill J. Releford, D.P.M., founder of The Diabetic Amputation Prevention (DAP) Foundation, and a squadron of volunteers will launch the “50 City Tour” in over 23 cities and 80 barbershops throughout the state of California on May 22, 2010 from 11AM to 3PM. The Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program, sponsored by a grant from the Center for Disease and Control and Prevention and Charles Drew University, is a unique and innovation grass roots approach to health education and screening.

Dedicated to addressing health care disparities among African American men, the Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program will offer free screening for diabetes and hypertension and will also provide information about prostate cancer decision making. “The need to address health care disparities in African American men is paramount in light of the fact that they have the lowest life expectancy of any group in the U.S.,” says Dr. Bill J. Releford, D.P.M. “For decades, black owned barbershops have served as a centralized gathering place where African American men feel comfortable discussing the most important issues that impact their lives: politics, social trends, family and finances. Now, we are introducing an important discussion of health and the critical need for health awareness.”
