R&B diva Patti LaBelle, a four-decade veteran of the music industry, will pick up an honorary degree next month from Temple University in her hometown of Philadelphia.

Miss Patti will add a doctorate in humane letters to her list of career achievements, which include multiple hit records, four books (including two cookbooks) and philanthropic work in diabetes.

LaBelle served as a spokeswoman for the American Diabetes Association after being diagnosed with the condition. Two years ago, she partnered with Temple to raise awareness of diabetes.

Temple President Ann Weaver Hart says in a statement Tuesday that the university is honoring LaBelle during its May 13 commencement ceremony “for her professional excellence and her selfless service to others.”
