Continental Airlines said today it will cut about 600 jobs at its call centers, citing a growing trend for customers to book tickets online, according to several published reports.

The cuts will take place at the airline’s call centers in Salt Lake City and Houston, as well as from the roughly 1,000 agents who work from home, according to a report on Businessweek.com.

The airline, the largest at Newark Liberty International Airport, said calls to the reservations centers have fallen 15 percent per year, the report said. The furloughs take effect April 11, and the airline said it will offer early-retirement packages to employees with more than 10 years of service.

The Houston-based airline has about 2,600 U.S. reservations agents.
