About our Project:

The World Class Sprinters is an 8th Grade Dissertation Project who has chosen to do research on the feasiblity of getting a regulated/near regulated track installed at Pin Oak Middle School.   This track will be utilized by both the school and community.   The condition of our current track has made it difficult for anyone to benefit from its use; especially our disabled students during physical education class.

One topic of our research is on childhood obesity and how the community can become involved to help fight this epidemic.  Studies have shown that low impact activities such as running and light jogging done consistently can have a significant positive impact on a child’s health and overall well-being.  By providing a track with a soft surface, students and others will be able to use the track for exercise without worrying about causing injury to their joints.

We are also researching the possibilities to ensure that this track adhere to the ADA guidelines.  This will be based on the incline of the access ramps and corner drop offs.  We want to ensure that all people can use this track including those with disabilities.

We are working with a contracting company who specializes in tracks to ensure our final options meet all of the HISD approved construction standards.

In addition to our project research, we are having fundraisers to raise the necessary funds to construct the track.   Our goal is do something for our school that will last for a long time.  Even though we will not benefit from it, we will be comforted in knowing that we have made a difference, prevented future accidents and help other young people to be healthy.
