The 1st Annual African American National Spelling Bee was a true success. Held at Jack Yates Senior Campus, middle-school students from across the Houston area competed in the first ever black spelling bee. The objective of the Bee was to expose middle-school aged African American youth to the origin and the spelling of words, increase vocabulary and develop confidence which will catapult student to a higher level of education. Members of congress Sheila Jackson Lee and Alexander Green presented the founder of the AANSBC, Robert Garner, with a plaque to acknowledge the event.
